Iljimae nu s-a născut sub o zodie norocoasă! Mama sa, o simplă servitoare, l-a conceput cu un înalt demnitar, iar l-a naştere l-a abandonat sub un cais. Cei care l-au găsit şi l-au adoptat, o familie din Qing Kingdom, i-au dat numele Iljimae, adică Creangă-de-Cais. În tinereţe, băiatul a încercat să ia legătura cu tatăl său natural, dar acesta nu l-a vrut prin preajma sa.
